PDKI - Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan

During the months of July and August 2005, the Islamic Republic of Iran killed, wounded and arrested hundreds of Kurdish people, who participated in the peaceful demonstrations condemning the brutal killing of a young Kurdish activist, Kamal Asfaram, nicknamed, Shiwana Qaderi, on 9 July 2005. Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan has investigated the fate of the detainees and victims of Islamic regime in Iran, and compiled a list of individuals who are accused of collaboration with various opposition groups. We believe the actual number of victims and detainees are more than what has been presented in this document. However, we call upon the international community to take a serious action to safeguard the lives of those who are detained or missing.

Since the instalment of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (July 2005) as the President, the human rights situation in Iranian Kurdistan has been increasingly deteriorated. The followings are some apparent cases of human rights violation during Ahmadinejad’s rein on power:

-Closing of Asso and Rojhelat Kurdish- Farsi newspapers that were accused of publishing anti-regime topics and news. A press violence court against journalists Mohammad Sadegi and Adnan Hosseini is on going. A variety of of cultural centres are threatened to be closed down.

-The internet cafes are accused of immoral usage of internet. In Marivan 5 Internet service providers were closed down by the security forces of regime and the data on the computers were checked.

- In many colleges and in Kurdistan University (Sanandaj) in particular, the Kurdish language studies were closed down. Students who have chosen their major or minor subject as Kurdish language are now without study subject; furthermore, they are threatened to be dismissed from the universities.

-The security forces systematically arrest Kurdish youths and accuse them of lawbreaker. The courts never disclose their offences.

-At least 25 teachers, who are accused shaving their moustache and wearing T-shirts, are dismissed. Since the instalment of Ahmadinejad presidency, wearing T-shirts shaving moustache is classified as an immense offence.

-The wedding parties should be organised in two different places, where men and women are separated. This causes a lot of problem for the Kurdish minority whose culture allows men and women to dance hand in hand.
